Step One - A Small Step

I really like the idea of starting small—it feels approachable and not overwhelming. Sometimes, the thought of changes can feel paralyzing, my automatic thought goes to a big change. Scarry! So knowing that little adjustments can make a difference is reassuring. But I do wonder, how do I pick the “right” small change? Should it be something that feels exciting, or is it more about just doing anything different to shake things up? Also, how do I keep myself from slipping back into old habits after trying something new once or twice?
The “right” small step is really any change that breaks the routine. It doesn’t have to feel exciting or life-changing—it just needs to be something different. If it sparks even a little curiosity or feels slightly out of your comfort zone, that’s a great place to start. For example, if you’ve always taken the same route to work, switching it up might seem small, but it’s enough to shift your perspective and engage your brain in a new way. Over time, these small shifts add up.
If you pay attention to your brain, you will know that something is different. Turn left from work instead of right. Not scarry, but different. You have to pay attention because you are in a new experience. It seems like nothing when you think about it, but actually doing it tunes you in to right now.
Try it! Let me know how it feels.
